EDDM Printing Costs vs. Postage: What to Budget For
When planning an Every Door Direct Mail campaign, distinguish the cost of producing your printed pieces from the cost of delivering them. The services included in a package can vary, so confirm each expense before placing an order.
Printing costs
Printing costs generally relate to producing the physical mailpieces. The total can depend on dimensions, quantity, paper specifications, finishing and the artwork supplied. Check the exact specifications of the product you select.
Postage costs
Postage is a separate consideration from printing unless your quote explicitly includes it. Postal charges depend on the applicable USPS service, eligibility and current rates. Do not assume a printing-only price includes delivery to households.
Mailing preparation and handling
Ask whether the quoted service includes any required bundling, paperwork, route preparation, transportation to a postal facility or other mailing-related handling. These services may be included, optional or handled by the customer.
How quantity affects your budget
Estimate the number of mailpieces needed for your selected delivery routes. Multiply the eligible mailing quantity by the applicable postage rate, then account separately for printing and any additional services. Confirm the final quantities and rates before purchasing.
Questions to ask before ordering
- Does the quote include printing only, or printing and postage?
- What finished size, paper and quantity are included?
- Are artwork checks or proofing services included?
- Who handles postal preparation and delivery to USPS?
- Are there additional setup, handling or transportation charges?
- What must be approved before production begins?
